2. Non-Affiliation with Epson
PrintFix is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, licensed by, or in any way officially connected with Seiko Epson Corporation, Epson America, Inc., or any of their subsidiaries, affiliates, or related companies.
"Epson", "EcoTank", "Expression Home", "Expression Premium", "WorkForce", "Stylus", and all related product names and model numbers are registered trademarks of Seiko Epson Corporation. These trademarks are used on this website solely for the purpose of identifying compatible products (nominative fair use). This use does not imply any endorsement, affiliation, or sponsorship.
PrintFix is an independent third-party repair tool. The Company has no contractual, commercial, or technical relationship with Seiko Epson Corporation.
3. Right to Repair — Legal Framework
PrintFix is a repair tool that enables consumers to exercise their right to repair. The legality of resetting a printer's waste ink counter is supported by the following legal texts and precedents:
3.1. European Union
- EU Directive 2024/1799 (Right to Repair) — Prohibits manufacturers from imposing software barriers that prevent consumers from repairing their own products. Applies to all EU member states.
- EU Directive 2019/771 (Sale of Goods) — Requires goods to remain functional and repairable. Software counters that artificially limit product life may violate conformity requirements.
3.2. France
- Article L441-2 of the French Consumer Code — Prohibits planned obsolescence ("obsolescence programmée"), defined as the use of techniques by which a product's lifespan is deliberately shortened. Punishable by up to 2 years imprisonment and €300,000 fine.
- HOP v. Epson (2017) — The French association Halte à l'Obsolescence Programmée filed a criminal complaint against Epson France for planned obsolescence related to its waste ink counter practices. Investigation ongoing.
3.3. United States
- Lexmark International v. Static Control Components (6th Cir., 2004) — Established that printer counters and microchips are not protected by copyright or anti-circumvention provisions of the DMCA.
- Impression Products v. Lexmark International (US Supreme Court, 2017) — Confirmed that patent rights are exhausted after first sale; manufacturers cannot restrict how a product is used post-purchase.
- Epson class-action settlement (2025) — Epson agreed to pay approximately $900 million to settle claims related to its waste ink counter practices in the United States.
3.4. Technical Basis
PrintFix communicates with printers using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), a standard, public, openly documented, and widely used network management protocol (RFC 1157, 1990). Epson printers expose their SNMP interface voluntarily on the local network without authentication. The Company does not bypass, circumvent, or defeat any access control, encryption, or digital rights management mechanism. The User accesses their own printer on their own local network.
4. Physical Ink Pad Warning
IMPORTANT: Resetting the waste ink counter does NOT remove ink from the physical waste ink pads inside your printer.
The waste ink counter is a software estimate of how much ink has been absorbed by internal pads during cleaning cycles. Resetting this counter to zero changes only the software value — it does not affect the physical state of the pads.
Risks if pads are physically saturated:
- Ink may overflow from the pads, causing leaks inside the printer or onto surrounding surfaces.
- Ink overflow may cause permanent damage to internal components (circuit boards, print heads).
- Ink may stain clothing, furniture, or other property.
Recommendations:
- After 2-3 counter resets, have the ink pads inspected or replaced by a qualified technician.
- Alternatively, install an external waste ink tank kit, which diverts waste ink outside the printer body, eliminating overflow risk.
- Monitor for signs of ink accumulation (ink smell, visible ink underneath the printer).
The User assumes full and sole responsibility for the physical condition, maintenance, and safety of their printer. The Company disclaims all liability for physical damage resulting from saturated ink pads.
5. Firmware Compatibility
Epson periodically releases firmware updates that may block the SNMP access required for the waste ink counter reset. The PrintFix diagnostic tool checks firmware compatibility before purchase.
However:
- The Company does not guarantee compatibility with firmware versions released after the date of the User's purchase.
- Users are strongly advised to disable automatic firmware updates on their Epson printer to preserve reset compatibility.
- If a firmware update renders the reset impossible after purchase but before use, the User may request a refund (see Terms of Service, Section 6.2).
- The Company is not responsible for Epson's firmware update decisions or their impact on third-party tools.
6. Service Limitations
- Epson only: PrintFix supports only Epson inkjet printers. Canon, HP, Brother, and other brands use fundamentally different protocols and are not compatible.
- WiFi only: The printer must be on the same local WiFi network as the computer running the desktop agent. USB, Bluetooth, and cloud printing are not supported.
- Network restrictions: Corporate networks, VPNs, firewalls, and some router configurations may block SNMP (UDP port 161). The Company cannot provide network troubleshooting.
- Model limitations: Not all Epson models are supported. The list of supported models is available at /supported-printers and may change at any time.
- Success rate: While the reset succeeds in the vast majority of cases on compatible firmware, the Company does not guarantee a 100% success rate.
7. No Warranty
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or accuracy. The Company does not warrant that:
- The reset will succeed on every printer model or firmware version.
- The Service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free.
- The diagnostic readings will be 100% accurate (they depend on the printer's internal SNMP responses).
- The Service will be compatible with future Epson firmware updates.
