Epson EcoTank Waste Ink Error — Why Your 'No More Ink Costs' Printer Just Stopped

6 min read PrintFix Team

You bought an Epson EcoTank specifically to stop wasting money on ink cartridges. The whole selling point was simple: refillable ink tanks, ultra-low cost per page, and printing that just keeps going. Maybe you spent $250 or $300 on the printer because Epson promised years of worry-free printing.

And then one day, the printer stops. A message appears on the screen or the lights start blinking in a pattern you have never seen before. The message says something about the ink pad being at the end of its service life, or that the printer needs servicing.

You stare at it and think: “But I have a tank full of ink. What ink pad?”

You are not imagining the irony. This is one of the most frustrating experiences in modern consumer electronics, and it affects EcoTank owners with a special sting.

The EcoTank Irony

Here is the thing that catches EcoTank owners off guard: the waste ink pad system has absolutely nothing to do with your ink tanks.

Your EcoTank’s refillable ink tanks are the ink supply — they hold the ink that goes onto your paper. The waste ink pads are a completely separate system. They are absorbent pads inside the printer that collect small amounts of excess ink produced during automatic maintenance operations like head cleaning, nozzle checks, and startup cycles.

Every Epson inkjet printer has these pads, whether it uses cartridges, CISS systems, or ink tanks. The EcoTank line is no exception.

And every Epson printer has a software counter that estimates how much waste ink the pads have absorbed. When this counter reaches 100%, the printer locks itself completely. It does not matter that your ink tanks are full. It does not matter that the physical pads may still have plenty of capacity. The software says stop, and the printer obeys.

For a detailed explanation of how this counter works, see our guide to the waste ink pad counter.

Which EcoTank Models Are Affected?

Every EcoTank model has a waste ink counter. It is not a matter of “if” — it is a matter of “when.” Here are some of the most commonly affected models:

EcoTank ET Series (North America / Europe)

  • ET-2720 / ET-2726 — one of the best-selling EcoTank models, and one of the most frequently affected
  • ET-2800 / ET-2803 — the budget EcoTank, reaches the limit faster due to frequent head cleaning on lower-end models
  • ET-2850 — mid-range, same issue
  • ET-4700 / ET-4760 — the multifunction models are not immune
  • ET-15000 / ET-16650 — even the wide-format EcoTank printers have the same counter

EcoTank L Series (Asia / Latin America / Global)

  • L3150 / L3250 / L3210 — extremely popular worldwide, and extremely common waste ink errors
  • L4150 / L4260 — same architecture, same counter
  • L5190 / L5290 — multifunction models, same problem
  • L6170 / L6270 / L6490 — higher-end models are not spared
  • L8050 / L8180 — even the photo-oriented EcoTank models

You can check whether your specific model is supported on our supported printers page.

What the Error Looks Like on EcoTank Printers

The error message varies slightly depending on your model and region, but here is what you will typically see:

On models with a screen (LCD panel):

  • “A printer’s ink pad is at the end of its service life. Please contact Epson Support.”
  • “Printer needs servicing. Contact Epson Support.”
  • A wrench icon or warning symbol with no further explanation

On models without a screen (LED lights only):

  • All lights blinking simultaneously — this is the classic waste ink full signal
  • The power light and ink light blinking together in an alternating pattern
  • The paper light and ink light blinking at the same time

In the Epson software on your computer:

  • “A printer’s ink pad is at the end of its service life.”
  • Error code W-13 or similar waste ink related code
  • The print queue shows an error with no clear explanation

If you are unsure whether your error is waste-ink related or something else, our Epson error codes guide can help you figure it out.

Why EcoTank Printers Hit This Limit

EcoTank printers actually tend to hit the waste ink counter limit faster than you might expect, for a couple of reasons:

More ink means more cleaning cycles

Because EcoTank printers have such a large ink supply, people tend to keep them for much longer than cartridge-based printers. A cartridge printer might be abandoned after a year or two when the cost of replacement cartridges exceeds the cost of a new printer. An EcoTank, by design, encourages you to keep using it for years.

More years of use means more automatic head cleaning cycles. More cleaning cycles means the waste ink counter climbs faster.

Head maintenance is ink-hungry

EcoTank printers perform regular automatic head cleaning to prevent the ink from drying in the nozzles. This is especially aggressive after the printer has been idle for a while. Each cleaning cycle pushes a small amount of ink through the heads and into the waste pads, and each cycle increments the counter.

If you print infrequently — say, a few times a month — the printer compensates by running extra cleaning cycles each time you start it up. Paradoxically, printing less often can make the counter fill up faster relative to the number of pages you actually print.

The counter does not care about your ink tank level

This bears repeating: the waste ink counter is completely independent of your ink tank levels. You could have full tanks and a 100% waste counter. The two systems do not talk to each other.

How to Fix the EcoTank Waste Ink Error

You have the same options as any Epson printer owner, but let’s be specific about EcoTank considerations.

Option 1: Send it to Epson ($80-$150+)

Epson will ask you to mail the printer in or take it to an authorized service center. They will replace the waste ink pads and reset the counter. This typically costs $80-$150 USD and takes 1-3 weeks.

For an EcoTank printer that cost $200-$400, this is a painful pill. You bought the EcoTank to save money on printing, and now you are paying almost half the printer’s price for a maintenance visit.

The waste ink counter is a software value. It can be reset to zero without replacing the physical pads (in most cases, the pads have plenty of remaining capacity). Here is how:

  1. Download PrintFix from the download page — it is free, lightweight, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  2. Open PrintFix and let it scan your network. It will find your EcoTank automatically via WiFi or USB.
  3. Check your counter level for free — you will see the exact percentage.
  4. Purchase a reset key from the pricing page (starting at EUR 4.99) and enter it in the app.
  5. Reset — the counter goes back to 0% in seconds. Restart your printer and you are back to printing.

The entire process takes about two minutes. PrintFix works over WiFi or USB — connect whichever way is most convenient for you.

Option 3: Buy a New Printer (Please Don’t)

Some people assume the printer is broken and buy a new one. For an EcoTank — a printer specifically designed for longevity — this is an especially wasteful outcome. Your printer is not broken. A software counter told it to stop. That counter can be reset.

Should You Worry About the Physical Pads?

For most EcoTank users hitting the counter for the first time: no. The software counter is deliberately conservative. The physical pads almost certainly have remaining capacity.

However, if you have owned your EcoTank for 4-5+ years and print regularly, or if you are resetting the counter for the second or third time, it is worth taking a look. You can open the printer, find the waste ink pads (usually accessible from the bottom), and check whether they are heavily saturated. Replacement pads are available online for a few dollars.

Prevention: Monitor Your Counter

The best approach is to check your waste ink level periodically so the lockout does not catch you off guard. With PrintFix’s free diagnostic, you can scan your printer anytime and see the current percentage. If you see it climbing above 80%, you know it is time to plan a reset.

Your EcoTank Deserves Better

You made a smart choice buying an EcoTank. It is a good printer designed to last. Do not let a software counter turn it into e-waste.

Download PrintFix for free and check your waste ink level right now. If you need to reset, get a key and be back to printing in two minutes.
